Headline: Epic South Swell Hits San Diego Beaches!
Well, I don't know if "Epic" is exactly the correct description, but it was a pretty big surf and from our position on the beach at "D" Street in Encinitas, it looked like the surfers were having some epic rides. Even the pelicans were impressed.
These were taken with a 200 mm lens from the comfort of my beach chair.
We decided that swimming in an epic swell was not such a swell idea so we stuck to the beach and photography.
We also had a few "beach coffees" which are actually beers disguised in coffee cups due to the no alcohol on the beach rules.
Not only was the surf big but there was a high tide. We had to scramble up the bluff a little to keep from being swept away.
It was a nice sunny day.
Here are more surf photos. It's difficult to judge the height of the waves from the photos but I'm guessing that the bigger sets had waves of 10 feet or more.
Only the best/bravest/foolish surfers attempt these waves. We saw some great rides and some spectacular spills.
Mike did venture into the near-shore white water for a bit, but that was the extent of our epic surf encounter. Oh yeah, check out the seagull flying by Debbie.
Friday Night with Kevin and Mary
We had a great Friday dinner and excellent conversations (read: Kevin being Kevin) around the chimenea with Kevin and Mary. They happened to be taking a brief vacation up in the OC and drove down for the evening.
It was Deb and Mike's grand finale evening in Cali and having Kevin and Mary be able to join us made it extra special. I'm sorry I didn't get more photos but we were having too much fun!
The week with Deb & Mike went by in a flash but it was a great week!
