Crazy Woman 8/31
On August 31, we got as far as Gillette, WY, where we camped at the Crazy Woman Campground. Below is a photo of me in the midst of cooking yet another gourmet camp meal. Of course I let Lorri help a little now and then.
Mt Rushmore 9/01
We took a 45-mile side trip to see Mt. Rushmore on Sunday of Labor Day Weekend. Was that a smart thing? It wasn't too bad and it is a sight worth seeing.
The Mount Rushmore Collection. We had more but there was a smudge on my camera lens so they don't look very good. These will have to do.
Wall Drug Store 9/01
Wall Drug Store is advertised on Billboards for hundreds of miles in each direction along I-90. Therefore, if you're a savvy traveler, you will drive right by. But, we just couldn't. Wall Drugs is a conglomeration of shops, food places, "museums", "art" galleries, and stuff like that, all designed to part the weary tourist with his hard-earned money. They even had a mini Mt. Rushmore which makes the presidents look more like John, Paul, George and Ringo, than George, Tom, Teddy and Abe.
Chamberlain, South Dakota, 9/01
We spent the night at Cedar Shore Campground on the Missouri River. Lewis and Clark passed by here a couple hundred years ago. We pressed on to Minnesota on Monday, only stopping for items of utmost historical significance.
The Corn Palace, Mitchell, SD, 9/02
This site of utmost historical significance is located in beautiful downtown Mitchell, SD, a few miles west of Sioux Falls. The facade is a mural made entirely of different color corn cobs and husks and is re-done every year (I wonder why!)
I forgot to mention that it is "world-famous". I can't wait to go back! I think San Diego should build something similar out of avocados. Hmmm... how may different color avos are there? Maybe just use the pits and paint them different colors. Maybe they could add some seaweed. No, that's green too. Oh well.
