Cape May
October 1, 2002. We headed from French Creek down to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, then caught the infamous Schuylkill Expressway through Philly, crossed the Walt Whitman Bridge over the Delaware and headed southeast to beautiful Cape May, New Jersey. Cape May lies at the southern tip of New Jersey. If you want to keep going south from there, you have to take a ferry across the mouth of the Delaware Bay to Lewes, Delaware.
Cape May is famous for its Victorian Architecture and its beautiful beaches. There are also a zillion places to spend your hard-earned money, one of which is pictured above. This is the Commons in the center of town.
There is also a lighthouse which I climbed up and Lorri did not. It had something to do with 197 iron see-through stairs and her fear of heights. The view on the left is looking easterly toward Cape May City. If you look at the photo on the right you can see the van and Lorri hovering beside it.
On the left is the beach and on the right is the Sea Breeze Motel where we stayed the night.
Heading up the Coast
The Boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ
Hereford Lighthouse, just north of Wildwood.
The Boardwalk at Atlantic City. We had lunch here and walked into Bally's but didn't gamble. This was our first visit to AC after many visits to Las Vegas. We think the Boardwalk is a great idea. It's a heck of a lot better way to casino-hop than walking along Las Vegas Boulevard.
We camped a night at Turkey Swamp State Park in northern NJ and the next day headed through New York City and into Connecticut. Pictured above is the entrance to the George Washington Bridge ($6 per vehicle!). Shortly after crossing the bridge we found ourselves on the Cross Bronx Expressway, possibly the roughest worst stretch of Interstate highway we've ever encountered. And I thought there were some nasty stretches in LA - nothing close. I would have taken some photos but it was too bumpy to hold a camera.
