September 16, 2002, we headed south from State College toward Gettysburg and then Baltimore. We stopped by Whipple Dam State Park, which we used to call "Whipples" when we would go there occasionally with a car full of kids and beer when we were Penn State students. On the right is the first of what will probably be many, many "fall color" photos. This was taken at Whipples.
Gettysburg
September 17, 2002. Even though I was raised in the Philadelphia area, I never toured the Civil War Battlefield at Gettysburg. We purchased an auto tour CD package and followed its directions and the plentiful signs and learned a little about the battle and what we were looking at. I highly recommend this method of touring Gettysburg.
There are a lot of cannon there. The scenery is so pastoral and peaceful now that it is hard to imagine how it must have looked almost 140 years ago when these things were firing at each other a half mile apart.
There are numerous monuments, large and small, throughout the park commemorating the men who fought here. This is the Virginia Memorial.
These two are at Little Round Top.
