Paso Robles, October 2 to 6

We met our great friends, Greg and Kelly at the local Albertson's, picked up a few essentials and then checked into our new home for the next four days, "Refuigio"!

It's such a great facility for two couples who like to hang and cook, drink good wine, and maybe enjoy a cocktail or two.

It has two extra-large master suites. This is ours.

Big fluffy towels and robes included

The kitchen, living, dining area

Conversation area. The couch folds out and there is a half-bath to the right

Kitchen/dining/Kelly

The other master suite has a big old tub!

Both suites have a private patio with a fire pit

Didn't need to use that stove this week!

Our shower

Dueling cooktops!

Those door "disappear" to open everything to the outside

Herman Story

After getting settled, we headed back out for a tasting at Herman Story

Hannah took good care of us

Including taking a photo!

Dinner that night included a spatchcocked whole chicken cooked over hot coals on the grill! (It tasted better than it looks!)

Thursday, October 3rd

Al Lago, Tin City

A new part of Tin City, the Annex on the south side, abuts open space in the back

And the Amtrak trains whiz right by

Desparada

Desparada!

We had a nice seated tasting and...

...then we got to check out the production/aging facility

And look at fermenting grapes!

Looks pretty industrial to me!

You always learn something new when they take you to where the action is!

Wine-tasting is so much fun!

They name their whatever these are. What's in "Dirty Uncle Dave"?

Ultima Tulie

Just a quick stop for a final tasting of the day

Meanwhile, the chairs were calling

And we answered! Thursday happy hour!

Cheers!

And Cheers again!

Friday, October 4th...somebody's birthday!

Party time!!!!

Caliza

First stop was Caliza's spanking new tasting room!

They've done a nice job renovating and building new stuff at the old Stacked Stone location

Grapes and Grains Store in Paso

There is an amazing new liquor store in downtown Paso

They have a beer and wine selection like nothing I've ever seen.

This is just a portion of their Rye selection

What should I buy? Too many choices!

Champagne anyone?

My new favorite store!

Le Cuvier

Birthday lunch/tasting here

Harvest was in full swing.

People were working!

The seating area

Some of the best views in Paso are right here

Happy Birthday to me!

Our view

We didn't use this grill, we used the Weber behind it.

Master chef Greg at work

Bacon!!!

Kelly made peach cobbler!

Tools of the trade

Cheers to the chef!

Finishing the racks on the grill

Thank you Greg and Kelly for the best birthday dinner!

Beautiful!

The table is set!

What a great day!

Saturday, October 5th

Hearst Ranch Winery

Did I mention it was HOT in Paso?

We decided to cool off and head to the coast for a tasting and lunch.

The area in and around Cambia goes whole hog with Halloween decor.

They call all the creatures "scarecrows" no matter what they look like.

Greg's new friend does not look very scary. Okay maybe a little.

The fog was burning off slowly.

Looking one direction and it was sunny...

...look the other and it was not

It rolled in, then it rolled out but at least it was cool and comfortable.

We even had sweaters and jackets on!

We made it back to Refugio and set up my iPad so we could watch the Padres play-off game. The place has no TVs but good wifi.

Go Padres!

The next morning was cool enough to open everything up, but alas, it was time to go.
