March 25
Just for fun we decided to take a road trip to the OC with stops in Newport Beach and Huntington Beach.
I lived in Newport on "the peninsula" my first five years in California and Lorri was pretty much raised in Huntington.
We pulled into the first bar we saw on the peninsula the Stag Bar and surprisingly (to me) it billed itself as the oldest bar in Newport Beach. I don't remember it from my five years there, but then, there are a lot of things I don't remember from those years!
I do however remember the Blue Beet. I think it used to be called Sid's Blue Beet? Not sure.
My old friend Phil and I had many a Sunday morning hangover curing chili cheese omelets at Charlie's. I wonder if the same cockroaches still live there.
the Beach Ball is still there.
So is Blackie's
I actually walked into Blackies and it looks exactly like it did 40 years ago!
Not much has changed on the peninsula, a few more McMansions, a little more commercial, but four of the five places where I lived during those five years are still there!
Downtown Huntington Beach, however, is a different place than it was back then. Sadly, pretty much unrecognizable.
Didn't take many photos. Bought a couple Jack's Surfboards T-shirts and hit the road home!
