Solana Beach Staycation While the House
Gets Tented (Fumigated) for Termites!

We didn't want to get fumigated along with the termites so we reserved a room at the local Solana Beach Holiday Inn Express for the two nights we were forced to evacuate.

This is what "tenting" looks like

They cover the house with tarps and clip them together and create an airtight envelope

Then they pump it up with bug-killing gas. Es muy peligro!

So we tried to make the most of it by spending the three days and two nights in Solana Beach which is the next town south along the coast from Encinitas. We were hoping for nice weather, which is almost guaranteed for October here, but alas, it was cloudy and cool the whole time!

So we decided to head down to Del Mar for the afternoon and started with an attitude adjustment Margarita at En Fuego Cantina! En Fuego! On Fire!

Well, maybe we weren't on fire yet but it was a good start!

Next stop, the outdoor bar at Monarch, atop Del Mar Plaza.
From here we headed back to the HI to get ready for our evening bar/appetizer crawl.

We walked down to the Brigantine which sits on a bluff overlooking the Del Mar Race Track, train tracks, Coast Highway, and the ocean.

We sat at the bar with a view of the track. No races in October, though.

We started with wine

...and oysters...

...and their special fish tacos. It was taco Tuesday!

We topped off the tacos with a martini - Tito's for the young lady and Tanqueray for the birthday boy. It was my birthday! Seriously! 10-4!

Next stop: Alce 101

Guess what "Alce" means in Spanish.

Lorri, Alce, and me

We had corn dog-style duck confit on a stick. I don't think that's what they called it on the menu, but that's what it was.

As we walked back to the hotel we realized were still a little hungry so we stopped in the CVS for snacks for the room: microwave pizza (terrible) and Tate's cookies (very good). We brought the Grenache from home (excellent).

On Wednesday we went to dinner at a great restaurant in Solana Beach called "Rare Society".

This was my special birthday dinner even though my birthday was the day before.

We brought our own nice bottle of red

Oysters Rockefeller!

Butter-soaked Parker House rolls. Decadent.

Seared rib eye with sides of scalloped potatoes and roasted mushrooms topped with an egg yoke. It was a great dinner and a nice getaway!

When we got home, all the termites were muerte! It was muy peligroso for them!
