Little Italy!

From Thursday afternoon, July 7, to Friday Morning, July 9, we celebrated our 37th Wedding Anniversary, which actually isn't until July 13, but that's OK.

This is our "view" room at La Pensione, a little hotel right in the middle of Little Italy

Well, they said it was a "View Room". I guess if you call a view of India Street from the second floor, it could qualify. The room itself was fine, mostly.

This was our main "view" window. One window had a "view" of the building next door about five feet away, and the other, an excellent view of a tree that we could reach out and touch if the windows could open.

First stop, on the recommendation of Jake and Beth (grandson and his wifey), was the King and Queen Cantina

It was a mostly Mexican and Tequila inspired place. I think they should change the name to Rey y Reina Cantina, in keeping with the theme.

Anyway, the drinks were good and our attitude got properly adjusted.

Later we were joined by Ashley and Frank (niece and soon-to-be hubby) sometimes referred to as Frashley.

After a few Not Not Tacos from Sam the Cooking Guy's place in the Little Italy Food Hall, we went for a stroll down India Street looking for a place where we could have some wine and actually hear each other talk.

We found this wine shop and bar called "Wine Shop and Bar" and enjoyed a glass or two ands a nice chat with Ash and Frank.

Friday morning we decided to have breakfast and brave the inevitable wait at Morning Glory, a very popular spot on the Piazza.

We found a table at which to sip our coffee and hang while waiting MG to call. That's our hotel and our room is out of sight to the right behind the trees!

Finally (actually only about 35 minutes) we were seated at a sort of bar overlooking the Piazza.

Bloody Marys and decadent food! Does it get any better?

After breakfast we went for a walk along the Bay

We discovered that the Star of India, the oldest operating sailing ship in the world, was being devoured by a giant squid!

And then we saw these giant people kissing like no one was watching. I took a video:

Here is Bob Hope telling jokes to various veterans. Actually, there are speakers scattered about in the trees and so on, and they are broadcasting Bob Hope jokes. We listened for a while, I think he may have invented the "dad joke".

We took a walk out to the end of the G Street dock which sort of encloses Tuna Harbor separating it from the Bay. This is a former military trash hauling boat awaiting its turn to be restored as a deep sea fishing vessel. It needs a lot of work!

The end of the pier is a favorite seagull hangout and they don't clean up after themselves. It does not smell nice.

Finally we stopped for some sustenance at Mike Hess Brewery.

The beer menu at Bar One

We stopped here for an afternoon snack of burger and fries, which were excellent, or we were hungry, or both. We had two beers and drank responsibly.

After a brief respite back at the hotel, we set out for the evening stopping first at Barbusa for cocktails at the bar,

Next, we hiked back down India Street past our hotel and the sign, to Allegro, a nice Italian (imagine that!) place that took over the space where Indigo Grill used to be.

We actually sat down for dinner at a two-top, as opposed to our regular routine of sampling appetizers at bar seating.

And here we are!

Last stop was Princess Grill for a nightcap

Saturday morning, Little Italy Farmers Market

Some hefty Zucchini, eh?

Well, that's it! It was a great pre-anniversary getaway with lovely Lorri Laroo, my wife, the love of my life, and so on...
