Trip Back East!

May 12 to June 2

We took off for Dallas and then Richmond early Wednesday morning, May 2nd. It was business as usual for AA. The wrong gate info was posted, and the flight crew had been given the wrong information and arrived at the airport a half-hour late.

But we got off the ground and made it to Dallas in time to catch our connecting flight to Richmond.

Yes, we were required to were our masks the whole flight when we weren't eating or drinking, so we ate and drank a lot.

I've seen clouds from both sides now!

Here we are at Dogwood Drive, Williamsburg VA

My brother Bob picked us up at the airport driving this shiny new BMW which turned out to be our rental car for the week because Enterprise was out of the car class we had reserved. I'm not complaining!

Our first Happy Hour with my brother since 2019! Cheers!

What else did we do in the Burg?

No visit is complete without an excursion to Williamsburg Winery, which is just down the street from Bob's house.

We opted for a bottle of their excellent Albarino on the "Pavilion" overlooking the vineyards.

The Winery is on the market in case anyone is looking to buy, not only the winery but the adjacent boutique hotel and a couple hundred acres of prime Tidewater real estate. Bob thinks they are asking around $40 million. A steal!

We had mostly great weather in Virginia! Here we are strolling down the newly paved Duke of Gloucester (DoG) Street, the main drag in the Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg.

This is the Wetherburn Tavern building. CW has a lot of "Taverns" like this one that tease you with the thought of a cold drought beer but turns out to be just another old building you can't go in.

I've always liked this threesome.

One evening we got some cheesesteaks from Rick's which offers the best cheesesteaks in town. Don't tell Sal I said so. This is Rick's menu. If you order a large, you can split it with a couple friends or save some of it for your next meal or two. I should have photographed the actual product but I forgot.

Like many locals during the pandemic, the powers that be allowed restaurants and other businesses to offer outdoor dining in areas the used to be for parking like this part of Prince George Street

Here is my brother Bob getting ready to go for a swim in the James River

The river is wide

Two wild and crazy guys!

Speaking of outdoor dining, DoG Street in Merchant Square is now a large dining room!

This is our former vacation home on Matoaka Court, just west of the William and Mary campus. We like to walk by it when we visit and reminisce about the fun times we had there.

More scenes from the HA. This is the Colonial Capital

A couple tourists

The Governor's Palace

A walk in the woods:

One day Lorri and I went for a hike along the Powhatan Creek Trail

And, sure enough, we found Pawhatan Creek.

We also accidently found "Church on the Main". We weren't looking for it and it's not really a church. Apparently in 1781 it was a church but now not much remains. 400 years ago the Battle of Green Spring took place near here.

British General Cornwallis spanked some Pennsylvanians and Virginians led by the Marquis de Lafayette and General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, but failed in his attempt to trap them. Not long after this battle, Cornwallis and the British army were themselves trapped a few miles north in Yorktown where he surrendered to George Washington. Well, actually he did not personally surrender to George, but that's another story.

Anyway, four months after the battle here, the Revolutionary war was effectively over. Those benches are where the church used to be.

Lorri, Bob and I went out for a nice happy hour at our favorite local eatery. Again, I forgot to take photos except for this, which is proof that we were there. If you add the State Tax and City Tax it comes to 12%! What the ...?

So cheers and farewell to Williamsburg and brother Bob. We had a great time and a great visit. Next time I need to remember to take more photos.
