Filling Clan Visits Encinitas!

<----Previous     Home     Next---->

Way back in January there was a wager regarding the outcome of the NFL Playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and the LA (formerly San Diego) Chargers. If the Ravens won, the San Diego contingent would travel to Baltimore in October to celebrate Grandpa Jack's 70th Birthday. If the Chargers won, the entire Filling clan would come to San Diego! Well, guess which team won?

The first to arrive late in the evening on October 1st were Jake and Beth

Wednesday, Oct 2

So here's Jake early the next morning showing off his culinary skills.

We decided to head up the coast to Carlsbad and go for a walk along the beach

We got as far as Vigilucci's at Tamarack (not real far!) before we decided it was time for a break.

The first of many "Cheers" moments of the week!

We were lucky to have an early check-in at the Airbnb at

Later, we celebrated with the Encinitas Yacht Club at Leucadia Pizzeria

Here is part of the crowd

And another part of the crowd...

And daughter Debbie took most of the rest of these photos! This is Marilyn's sister Joyce, Lady Di, me, Marilyn, Lorri, and Liz

Helmut and Lorri. Is that a paper napkin in Helmut's jacket pocket? He's always so dapper!

We had a great turnout for the eYc Happy Hour, Jack's birthday celebration. Thanks to all my Yacht Club friends and my family for making it special.

Friday, Oct 4, my actual Birthday day!

70 never looked so good? I don't know about that gift hat from Kelly and Greg, but I was on my way to feeling pretty good!

We spent the day hanging around town and the Airbnb.

Here we are going down the stairs at "D" Street

This shot sort of makes me dizzy

The Beach!

We had a great dinner (steaks from Seaside on the BBQ!) at the beach house (the Airbnb) with just the family. Did anyone take photos?

Saturday, Oct 5

Welcome to Jacktoberfest!

We had an Oktoberfest themed party in our back yard for our family and a few close friends.

Our good old friends, Dave and Wendy and me in my garb. Dave and I were partners in business for a long time!

We were happy to have most of the cousins (The Scuzzies) with us! This is Chris, Sara, and Haley

This is Ryan (RC), Ashley, and Rachel. I could explain who's who and diagram the family tree, but maybe some other time.

Meanwhile, around the corner at the park....

I turned 35 twice. When I hit 35 the first time, I started over again at 1. Funny I don't feel 35x2!

So we went up those creaky attic stairs with our drinks in hand?

Monday, Oct 7

Mal's great friend Michelle has moved from Baltimore to San Diego for a new job. She arrived in town on Sunday and on Monday made the trip from PB with another Baltimore transplant, Ryan T!

Michelle's Birthday was October 5, so we had a little celebration for her.

What a crowd!

What another crowd!

Tuesday, Oct 8

This is from the small overlook at the end of "A" Street, looking down at the beach.

I guess I didn't take any more photos on Tuesday

Wednesday, Oct 9

Last day at the Beach House.

Four Generations again

Deb wants me to do a painting of this scene. Perhaps I will.

Thursday, Oct 10

Mal, Colin, and Olivia headed home today and we checked out of the Airbnb.

Luckily, we still had a couple more days before Deb and Mike had to leave, so went to visit GPV and then to Cordiano Winery in the San Pasqual Valley.

I can't say the wines are world-class but the setting is great!

Looking out over the valley...

Happy Hour at 3rd Corner with Greg

Friday, Oct 11

Oceanside Pier

There has been a lot of construction activity in Oceanside - new condos, hotels, restaurants, breweries, and tasting rooms, so we thought we'd do some exploring.

We asked a woman to take our photo because she was taking photos of her own with a big expensive looking DSLR.

She made me turn my hat backward so you could see my face - not sure that was a good idea.

Guess where we are?

Cheers to a great week, a great visit, good times, good friends, and a great family gathering! We should do it again soon!
