Little Italy Staycation!

July 12 - 14

<----Previous     Home     Next---->

We were invited to the Padres' Friday, July 12, night game by our good friends, Doug and Karen Stroup, and since our 34th Anniversary was Saturday, the 13th, we decided to make a weekend of it!

So we drove to Little Italy....

Parked the car (underground parking at La Pensione)

...and checked in! Our room was the top one on the corner with the four large windows. Great views but a little noisy.

First stop was the upper bar at Born and Raised, BAR for short.

Lorri had dirty Tito's

For a fancy steak house the happy hour specials were quite reasonably priced and they were good too!

Above us was a mirrored ceiling. Here I am taking a photo of us in the mirror.

Here I am taking another photo but not looking up. If you were in the mirror on the ceiling, this is what we would have looked like. Well, not really, because in the mirror, things are reversed.

Born and Raised from across the street

This is the view from our room looking down India Street. By the way, why didn't they call it "Italy Street"? This is Little Italy, not Little India!

We met Doug and Karen here at Half Door, a fun spot near the ballpark.

HDBC

Here we are at their excellent seats!

Just past the visitors dugout down the third base line, two rows up, and one row behind an old, fat, white Tony Gwynn.

Fun time, great friends, excellent seats, Padres lost. :-(

The next morning, Saturday, farmers' market day in Little Italy. The restaurant on the second floor on the left, "Morning Glory" was where we want to try for breakfast but the wait was too long.

This is looking straight down from our window to Date Street

It's a berry good farmers' market!

There are flower farmers too!

After the market we took a walk back toward the Gaslamp along the Bay where we saw the big dead fish with a mockingbird on top.

It was a little overcast and chilly. This is looking at Seaport Village from the end of the fishermen's pier. Or maybe it's the fisherperson's pier.

Looking at the Coronado Bridge and Coronado and a sailboat on the Bay

We walked across the pedestrian bridge over  Harbor Drive and the train yard into the East Village area around the ballpark

We ended up back at HDBC where we had lunch and ran into Dick Powell, an old friend and fellow former H&A employee. Forgot to get a photo.

Here we are waiting for our lunch.

This is Lorri with PetCo Park in the background. We caught a Lyft back to Little Italy and rested in our room for a while before we headed back out for an evening of bar-hopping and appetizer sampling.

This is the downstairs bar at Born and Raised. Notice the Art Deco motif.

What better way to begin a night out than (not necessarily in this order) with a good martini, friendly bar, and the woman of my dreams, Lorri, the love of my life, my wife of 34 years today!

This is my last photo from the evening and the weekend. We must have been having too much fun after that to stop and take photos. 'Twas a wonderful weekend!
