Williamsburg and Virginia Beach

May 14 - 28

We flew American Airlines from San Diego to Dallas/Fort Worth to Richmond where we rented a car and drove to beautiful and historic Williamsburg, Virginia!

My brother Bob's Dogwood Drive estate was looking good!

The next day was a gorgeous early summer day in the Burg, so here are some obligatory photos taken in the Historic Area.

"Colonial Street" - how original!

Three houses

I love the green moss on the roofs

The Raleigh Tavern

Me, my bro, and my wife

The capitol building in the background

A steer

One of my favorites. I suppose I should remember the names of all these building, but I don't.

So, this sort of sums up what we did our first day in the Burg.

This sort of sums up what we did our second day in the Burg. This is a statue of Matoaka, otherwise know as Pocahontas or Rebecca Rolfe. It is located in Historic Jamestowne near the site of the 1607 fort and settlement.

Virginia Beach

My friend and fraternity brother, Dick Anthony, and his wife, Diana, drove all the way from the wilderness of upstate Pennsylvania to spend a long weekend with us at the beach. Here we are at Murphy's Irish Pub toasting our health!

And here we are on the windy beach

And here we are in front of Neptune on the boardwalk.

Neptune palming a sea turtle. Big dude! I wonder if he played basketball...

Everything you need to know about King Neptune and Virginia Beach.

I don't think I would want to be in Virginia Beach in the middle of the summer when all these hotels are at capacity. It must be a zoo!

Three miles of high-rise hotels! We were there the weekend before Memorial Day and it was quite nice and not crowded. It was good to see Dick and Di. Sorry I didn't take more photos.

Back in the Burg

The Path Not Taken. Well actually, I did take this path. It leads to Matoaka Court through Matoaka Woods.

This is part of the pedestrian/bicycle path that eventually will stretch from Jamestown to Richmond, about 45 miles.

This portion is near Jamestown.

Where the land is swampy, there are boardwalks like this one so you don't get your sneakers muddy.

This deer and his (or her) buddy have the whole wheat field in which to gorge themselves. They'll make some fine venison come the Fall.

Time for a late afternoon attitude adjustment!

New plantings and a new pavilion at Williamsburg Winery.

You buy a bottle in the tasting room, borrow drinking vessels, relax on a nice padded rocking chair, and enjoy the good life.

They're making some fine Viognier in Virginia.

Bob and Lorri kicking back

The Fat Canary

Lorri and I have made a tradition of having cocktails and appetizers at the bar at the Fat Canary, our favorite Williamsburg restaurant. It was a Thursday, so this is a toast to our Thursday happy hour Encinitas Yacht Club friends.

This is the soft shell crab. It was perfectly prepared. OK, it's not the prettiest piece of food I've seen on a plate, but how do you make a crab look good?

This, on the other hand, is pretty. It is their take on a caprese salad with thinly sliced Virginia ham taking the place of prosciutto, wrapped in hand-made mozzarella. it was delicious!

Selfie at the Bar at Fat Canary

We got on a game of Giant Jenga at Berrets while waiting for a table to open up
Click here to see a video of Lorri toppling the tower!

Here we are back at the winery!

And here we are at the Blue Talon, another of our favorites in the Burg.

The Williamsburg Gold Course

Lovely lady at the Williamsburg Inn

Williamsburg Tennis Club. Not a soul on the courts. It was a little warm, but not that warm!

The sheep may have been a little warm, though.

Hey, shouldn't these sheep be shorn?

One day I went the public courts and hit against this wall. That was the extent of my working out for the three weeks back east if you don't count walking as working out, which I don't.

Nice courts!

One day we jumped in the Rogue and drove to this winery for a tasting.

This is the winery. Inside there were about a hundred people all talking loudly in a big echo-y room. IT WAS LOUD! And the wine wasn't very good, so we left.

This is my brother sporting his Cabrini University paraphernalia. He was very happy that his alma mater won the NCAA Division III Lacrosse National Championship. I was a little disappointed the Penn State Nittany Lions were eliminated in the D-1 semis the day before.

Yes, Cabrini is Number One!

It was a great visit with good old Uncle Hobble and good to be back in the Burg for a bit!
