Surfing Madonna Run!
Guinness World Record!
Lorri and I signed up for the 5K portion of the Surfing Madonna Run held on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas
The Surfing Madonna mosaic appeared mysteriously one morning in 2011 attached to the concrete wall of the I-5 Freeway overpass at Encinitas Blvd. It looked like this:
It has since found a new home on the side of a restaurant facing Encinitas Blvd, not very far from it's initial location. Anyway, "Save the Ocean" was and is the message and all proceeds from the race go to "protecting our ocean from the harmful effects of pollution, and to cultivating new ocean advocates."

The crowd is starting to gather
The race was billed as an effort to set a Guinness World Record for the largest run entirely on sand
The tide was way out, so there was plenty of room and flat sand on which to run.
Here I am warming up, or thinking about warming up. Yes I run barefoot on sand all the time.

This is looking south.
The hardest part was the 20 yards uphill to the finish line.
There were 4288 finishers, including Lorri and I, and we now hold a Guinness World Record!
And here are our medals to prove it.
All the races started at once so finishers of the 10K and 15K as well as walkers on the 5K just kept pouring in.
It was a lot of fun! I think we'll do it again next year if we're in town.
