To celebrate our 29th Anniversary, Lorri and I
spent a couple days and nights in Little Italy, staying at "La Pensione"
Hotel at Date and India Streets.

We know now why they call it "La Pensione", which means "small and cozy" in
Italian, possibly

This is our room

This is our room looking the other way. The bathroom is to the left. Not
complaining at all, it was clean and functional and the location was
perfect!

This was the view from our window, out toward the Bay

Looking down on Date Street

Little Italy, San Diego and RIP Tony Gwynn, No. 19

First stop, La Villa.

Italian draft beer and a glass of prosecco, a good start!

Next up was Monello, a place we liked a lot

On Fir Street, just off India.

A nice menu and good concept.

For happy hour they prepare small plates to compliment your drink order.
Here we have some gnocchi, fried zucchini and pizza bites to compliment our
sauvignon blanc.

Monello, me and the hostess

Ironside is the trendy new place in Little Italy

A nice bar and nice ambiance, at least in the late afternoon.

The bar stools are not very comfortable, though, especially for the
vertically challenged.

Oysters! $1 each at happy hour!

After a little R&R back at La Pensione, we started the evening at Isola, a
family owned place that serves their own family made wine from Italy

They have a colorful food prep area with a woof fired oven.

Across the street we discovered "Davanti" which we liked enough to return
then next night, good service and good food.

We sat on the back patio. Lorri has her new reading glasses on.

We had a nice bottle of wine along with braised short rib on a bed of creamy
polenta - excellent! a fitting end to the evening.
On Friday we went walking along the Harbor

We saw this really large couple kissing like nobody's watching.

We saw a tiny fishing boat next to the massive Midway Aircraft Carrier.

We saw the Star of India

We walked all the way to Seaport Village and tried to steal these two bikes
for the trip back but they were locked.

Lorri got caught and they booked her at Headquarters

I think she was standing on her toes.

I bailed her out in time for lunch with her sister, Lynn, who works
downtown.

Lynn's office is right about in the middle of this photo.

Waterfront, on Ketner at the outskirts of Little Italy, advertises itself as
the oldest tavern in town.

People call it a dive bar, but it looked OK to me. Serving free crab legs at
happy hour, I think disqualifies it from dive bar status.

"Po Pozzo" means slightly or a little crazy. We had to go in!

We didn't eat here

But we did have some wine, a Pinot from Cienaga Valley in Monterrey County.
Pretty good.
Well, no more photos from our Friday night adventures.

The weekly market takes place on Saturdays on Date Street. This is the view
from our hotel window.

Another view from our window.

Smilin' Jack! He was sensational!
Some color from the market:

It was a great getaway and a great way to celebrate 29 wonderful years
together!
