After endless weeks of nothing but hard work, we decided to take a break for my birthday week and go to the Paso Robles area for a little wine tasting and some r&r.

Monday

We loaded up the van and made the trek up I-5, I-405 and US 101 stopping first at Refugio State Beach, just a little way north of Santa Barbara and right on the ocean.

It was a little chilly and a little rainy but still, it was good.

Tuesday

The next day, our first stop was Latitia Winery.

DSCN3455.jpg (346859 bytes)  DSCN3456.jpg (279349 bytes)

Next we, checked in at the Wine Country RV Resort and then went directly to Le Vigne Winery which is just up Airport Road from the WCRV Resort

DSCN3457.jpg (294837 bytes)  DSCN3459.jpg (268072 bytes)

It is an interesting place complete with a nice selection of food goodies and a couple Pullman Railroad cars out back.

DSCN3464.jpg (192225 bytes)  DSCN3465.jpg (187154 bytes)  DSCN3466.jpg (232979 bytes)

Here are the RR cars

DSCN3470.jpg (408762 bytes)  DSCN3471.jpg (460704 bytes)

Yes, when we "camp" at an RV Resort, we are usually the smallest vehicle around. This place has a pool, spa, billiard room, work-out room, store, showers and bathrooms and sewer, water and electric at every spot. Not only that you can literally walk to a couple wineries. Location, location, location...

Wednesday

Winery number one was J Lohr, one of the larger producers and one which we had not visited on our previous trips for that very reason.

DSCN3472.jpg (355277 bytes)  DSCN3473.jpg (348665 bytes)  DSCN3474.jpg (224869 bytes)

We surprised and impressed by their wines as well as the friendliness and attention of their tasting room staff.

DSCN3476.jpg (193293 bytes)  DSCN3477.jpg (374926 bytes)  DSCN3478.jpg (208925 bytes)

Yes, they make a lot of wine for mass consumption, but they also make some very nice higher end wines with limited availability.

Eberle was next

DSCN3480.jpg (330769 bytes)  DSCN3481.jpg (190313 bytes)  DSCN3483.jpg (374189 bytes)

We stopped to say hello to fellow PSU Alum, Gary Eberle, who has been making wines here since the 70's.

DSCN3484.jpg (317122 bytes)  DSCN3485.jpg (168514 bytes)  DSCN3487.jpg (481833 bytes)

Of course he was busy somewhere else but we had a nice visit and got to talk some Penn State stories with some of the staff as well as taste some fine Eberle wines.

DSCN3488.jpg (306366 bytes)  DSCN3490.jpg (288798 bytes)

Keeping to the east side we next stopped at Pear Valley. The Paso area is divided into "east" and "west" sides by Rte. 101 and the "terrior" varies greatly from east to west and thus the wines do too

DSCN3491.jpg (407709 bytes)  DSCN3492.jpg (535129 bytes)  DSCN3494.jpg (495844 bytes)

The Pear Valley tasting room sits on a hill (not a valley!) with some great 360 degree views.

DSCN3495.jpg (488681 bytes)  DSCN3496.jpg (375022 bytes)  DSCN3497.jpg (324399 bytes)

The owners put a lot of money into the tasting room and the surroundings.

DSCN3498.jpg (337434 bytes)  DSCN3499.jpg (405247 bytes)  DSCN3500.jpg (308940 bytes)

All these photos were taken in the area around the tasting room,

DSCN3501.jpg (328847 bytes)  DSCN3502.jpg (412118 bytes)  DSCN3503.jpg (342930 bytes)

There is sort of an outdoor wedding chapel up a small hill from which these were taken.

DSCN3504.jpg (309904 bytes)  DSCN3505.jpg (414729 bytes)  DSCN3506.jpg (466282 bytes)

DSCN3521.jpg (290921 bytes)

This is the "chapel"

 DSCN3509.jpg (418496 bytes)  DSCN3510.jpg (281001 bytes)  DSCN3511.jpg (261877 bytes)

DSCN3512.jpg (389268 bytes)  DSCN3513.jpg (375658 bytes)  DSCN3514.jpg (348818 bytes)

Sculptures and everything!

DSCN3515.jpg (449349 bytes)    DSCN3525.jpg (246674 bytes)  DSCN3527.jpg (522443 bytes)

That's it, J Lohr, Eberle and Pear Valley - three wineries and then off to town to check in.

Paso Robles Inn

DSCN3531.jpg (378915 bytes)  DSCN3529.jpg (499122 bytes)  DSCN3528.jpg (422742 bytes)

If you're ever looking for a decent place to stay in Paso, as long as you don't mind virtually no sound insulation between rooms, I highly recommend the Paso Robles Inn. I'm pretty sure about the sound insulation thing because we could hear the guy next door snoring. The grounds are beautiful and the location is perfect for walking to the shops, restaurants and tasting rooms in town.

The Paso Robles Town Square (some of it)

Thursday

We had an appointment at 11 AM for a tasting at Changala Winery on the west side.

DSCN3536.jpg (279623 bytes)  DSCN3533.jpg (349420 bytes)  DSCN3532.jpg (541344 bytes)

Changala wines were good and reasonably priced and we had a great time with Heather (of Changala) and another couple who joined us.

DSCN3535.jpg (372155 bytes)  DSCN3537.jpg (263771 bytes)  DSCN3534.jpg (303244 bytes)

The other couple were in the wine industry and gave us a lot of insight to the area as well as some recommendations of where to visit next. Heather also was very helpful. We must have been there for an hour and a half and ended up joining their wine club.

DSCN3539.jpg (400109 bytes)  DSCN3540.jpg (155242 bytes)  DSCN3541.jpg (203318 bytes)

We had a nice visit to Chateau Margene but it got a little rainy. We had lunch in the van before heading back to Paso.

Friday

Daou Winery is building a brand new tasting room. We'll go back when it's done. The views are great and their wines are very nice, "French"-style blends and varietals.

DSCN3542.jpg (491201 bytes)  DSCN3543.jpg (427262 bytes)  DSCN3544.jpg (226488 bytes)

Whalebone was a fun spot.

DSCN3551.jpg (368721 bytes)  DSCN3550.jpg (244980 bytes)  DSCN3547.jpg (329941 bytes)

More on Whalebone later.

DSCN3554.jpg (149612 bytes)  DSCN3553.jpg (170090 bytes)  DSCN3552.jpg (436782 bytes)

We swung by Pasolivo for some olive oil tasting for a change of pace. Turns out you can taste wine here too!

We went to Niner next and got so wrapped up in the heart-shaped oak grove that I forgot to take photos of the winery!

DSCN3556.jpg (345033 bytes)  DSCN3557.jpg (366321 bytes)  DSCN3558.jpg (361377 bytes)

So here are the heart photos

DSCN3555.jpg (307741 bytes)  DSCN3562.jpg (396232 bytes)  DSCN3563.jpg (461670 bytes)

...and some more...

DSCN3564.jpg (520159 bytes)  DSCN3565.jpg (507088 bytes)  DSCN3566.jpg (421777 bytes)

Final stop was Booker where we had been on a previous trip and really liked their wines.

DSCN3577.jpg (657136 bytes)  DSCN3568.jpg (215460 bytes)

DSCN3567.jpg (198650 bytes)

Again, we were impressed and joined their club too!

DSCN3569.jpg (259344 bytes)  DSCN3570.jpg (310119 bytes)

Booker

DSCN3571.jpg (497965 bytes)  DSCN3578.jpg (451239 bytes)

We stayed back at the WCRV Resort Friday night, crowded in the van with about four cases of wine.

DSCN3579.jpg (159680 bytes)

On Saturday we high-tailed across 46 to I-5 and then bombed on down the Interstate through LA and Orange County to home - a great get-away. Just before you get to I-5 on Route 46 you pass through a forest of oil rigs. Nice. I hope, at least, that they doing their part in reducing our dependency on middle east oil, just as the Paso wine producers are reducing our dependency on French wines.
