Camping/Whale Watching!

We had spectacular weather the week of January 22, so we thought we might try to get a camping spot at San Elijo State Beach Campground, which is about a mile south of where we live. Sure enough, they had a bluff-top site available so we spent a couple nights hanging out and a couple days looking for whales.

These are the views from our spot the first night. (We had to move to another site the next day.)

Lorri is looking for whale spouts while I smoke a stogie.

Our friend Jan showed up Tuesday afternoon to help us watch the sunset and join us for a beverage or two. I should mention that we saw plenty of whales! We saw many, many spouts and whale backs and tales. I even saw a couple half-breaches although they were pretty far away down the coast.

I say the weather was "spectacular" which means it was very clear and sunny but it did cool off at night - down into the mid-forties. That's why Lorri and Jan are bundled up. Once the sun went down, it got chilly.

Our new site on Wednesday was about six sites north along the bluff. We were joined by our friend Kelly, and again, it was good to have help watching the sun set and drinking martinis. We saw more whales too!

This is the beach just below the bluff upon which we camped.
